Google Doodle commemorates powerlifting Paralympics 2024 event with animated

On September 5, the La Chapelle Arena in Paris will host a thrilling day of Para Powerlifting, with four Paralympic champions set to be crowned—two in the afternoon and two in the evening. Here’s a look at the key athletes and schedule for day two of the competition.

Morning Champions

The women’s up to 50kg final will kick off the day’s action, promising a fierce competition. Great Britain’s Olivia Broome, the reigning world champion and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, is a strong favorite for gold. However, China’s Jinping Xiao, who recently set a new Asian record with a 123kg lift in Tbilisi, will pose a serious challenge. Also watch out for Bose Bejide, who has shown impressive form at recent World Cups. Notably absent are China’s Hu Dandan and world record holder Esther Oyema of Nigeria (131kg).

Next on the schedule is the men’s up to 59kg final, where China’s Qi Yongkai stands as the man to beat. The defending Paralympic and world champion will face tough competition from El Salvador’s Herbert Aceituno, a medallist at both Tokyo 2020 and the Dubai 2023 World Championships, and Iran’s Mohsen Bakhtiar, who has had a commanding season. The world record of 211kg in this category is held by Egyptian lifter Osman since Rio 2016.

Evening Highlights

One of the most anticipated events of the day will be the women’s up to 55kg final, where a showdown is expected between Ukraine’s Mariana Shevchuk and Egypt’s Rehab Ahmed. Shevchuk is the reigning Paralympic champion and Tbilisi 2021 Worlds gold medallist, while Ahmed is the current world champion, world record holder (135kg), and a silver medallist at Tokyo 2020 in the lower weight category (-50kg).

The day’s final event will be the men’s up to 65kg final. China’s Zou Yi, the reigning world champion and world record holder (222kg), looks strong heading into the competition. However, he will face a determined challenge from Iran’s Amir Jafari Arangeh, who will be looking to upgrade his Tokyo 2020 silver to gold after finishing as the runner-up at the Dubai 2023 World Championships.

With top athletes and record-holders competing, day two promises to deliver thrilling contests and unforgettable moments in Para Powerlifting.
