At least 4 killed in Georgia shooting at high school
FBI alerted last year to Georgia school attack suspect
Four people were killed Georgia shooting at high school and nine others injured in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday. The suspected gunman, a 14-year-old student, is in custody. Here’s a summary of what we know:
Victims
The four individuals who were killed have been identified as:
- Mason Schermerhorn, 14, student
- Christian Angulo, 14, student
- Richard Aspinwall, teacher
- Christina Irimie, teacher
The two adults killed were math teachers, and Aspinwall also served as an assistant football coach. Nine other people—eight students and one teacher—were wounded and hospitalized. All are expected to survive.
Suspected Shooter
The suspected shooter has been identified as Colt Gray. He will face murder charges and be tried as an adult. According to the FBI and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Gray was questioned last year regarding anonymous tips about online threats of a school shooting, but there was no probable cause for arrest at that time.
Timeline of the Shooting
- Student Lyela Sayarath said Gray left his Algebra 1 class around 9:45 a.m. When he returned near the end of the class, he knocked to be let in. A student noticed the gun and did not open the door. Gray then went to the next classroom and began shooting.
- The first reports of the shooting were received by the sheriff’s department around 10:20 a.m.
- Law enforcement, including two school resource officers assigned to the school, arrived shortly after.
- A resource officer confronted the shooter, who surrendered immediately and was taken into custody, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
- All schools in the district were placed on lockdown, and police were dispatched to all district high schools as a precaution.
- The FBI, ATF, and other local and state officials were on the scene investigating, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The Investigation
- There were no additional incidents or scenes reported, according to law enforcement sources.
- The weapon used was an AR-platform rifle, confirmed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
- Apalachee High School had received a phone threat earlier that morning warning of shootings at five schools, with Apalachee being the first target.
- GBI Director Chris Hosey stated there’s no evidence of other schools being targeted, and no indication of additional shooters. Investigators are exploring leads on any potential associates, though none have been identified so far.
- Schools in the county will remain closed for the week as the investigation continues.
