Starbucks app down on the first day of the chain’s holiday menu
Some Starbucks customers couldn't order through the chain's mobile app on Thursday.
Starbucks app down experienced an outage on Thursday morning during the peak coffee rush, leaving many customers unable to place orders. Users reported receiving a message saying, “Mobile ordering is currently unavailable,” and were directed to place orders in-store instead.
The timing of the outage coincided with the launch of Starbucks‘ holiday menu, which features seasonal items like a gingerbread-flavored chai and themed merchandise, including popular reusable cups and holiday mugs. Dozens of app users took to social media to report issues, and Downdetector, which tracks website outages, saw a spike in reports around 8 a.m. ET, a particularly busy time as many people make their coffee runs.
Starbucks app down : While Starbucks did not comment on the outage to Business Insider, it addressed customer concerns on X (formerly Twitter), confirming a “temporary outage” affecting the order-ahead feature. Starbucks assured customers they could still place orders directly in stores or at drive-thrus.
The Starbucks app has been a significant driver of growth for the company, but it has also posed challenges for employees, who report feeling overwhelmed by the high volume of mobile orders, particularly with customers’ customized drink requests. CEO Brian Niccol, who joined Starbucks in September, recently noted plans to implement “guardrails” to help manage the complexity of mobile orders and streamline the process for baristas.
