Deadpool & Wolverine Director Reveals Henry Cavill’s 8-Hour Cigar Session Left Him ‘Sick to His Stomach
Warning: Spoilers Ahead for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, has disclosed that Henry Cavill became “sick to his stomach” after puffing cigars for eight hours straight during his brief cameo as the Wolverine variant “the Cavillrine.”
In an early montage of the film, Deadpool explores the multiverse to find a version of Wolverine to join him. While most Wolverine variants are portrayed by Hugh Jackman, one is played by Cavill. Levy shared with The New York Times that Cavill fully immersed himself in the role.
“Not only did he bring that impressive physique, but he also kept a cigar lit and in his mouth throughout the entire shoot,” Levy said.
“I heard the next day that Henry was feeling ill from inhaling cigar smoke for eight continuous hours, yet he never faltered.”
Levy also mentioned that they cast Cavill shortly after he left his role as Superman in the DC Comics films.
“It wasn’t long after the news broke that Henry was out as Superman,” Levy noted. “Since Deadpool thrives on cultural commentary, it was the perfect moment to cast him in a role he would excel in while also poking fun at the other comic book universe and embracing some self-awareness.”
Deadpool & Wolverine has become a major hit and is on track to be the highest-grossing film of the year. Currently, Inside Out 2 holds that title, making 2024 a strong year for Disney following a weaker box office performance in 2023.
In addition to Cavill, Channing Tatum makes a surprise appearance in the film and expressed his gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for his role as Gambit.
Tatum had spent years working on a standalone Gambit film for 20th Century Fox, but the project was shelved after Disney acquired Fox in 2019.
“I thought Gambit was lost to me forever. But Ryan Reynolds fought for me and Gambit. I’ll be eternally grateful to him,” Tatum wrote on social media.
“I’m not sure how I could ever repay him for what this means to me. I love you, buddy. And Shawn Levy as well—what a brilliant creator. Everything happens for a reason. I’m thrilled to be in this film. It’s a masterpiece and a pure joy. I was literally cheering in the theater. LFG!!”
