Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically died in a biking accident
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically passed away Thursday night in a biking accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The Gaudreau brothers were biking near their hometown of Salem in Salem County when the accident occurred. The Blue Jackets confirmed the devastating news in a statement released by the team.
Gaudreau, 31, was an integral part of the Blue Jackets, having signed with the team as an unrestricted free agent from the Calgary Flames in July 2022. He was preparing for a comeback season after facing challenges in his first two years with Columbus. Recently, Gaudreau had represented the United States at the men’s world championships in Czechia, where he impressed with three goals, eight assists, and 11 points in eight games.
This tragedy marks another heartbreaking loss for the Blue Jackets, following the death of goalie Matiss Kivlenieks in a fireworks incident in July 2021. Gaudreau was set to be a groomsman at his sister Katie’s wedding on Friday, adding another layer of sorrow to the family’s grief. He is survived by his wife, Meredith, and their two young children, Noa and Johnny.
Gaudreau’s decision to join the Blue Jackets was motivated by his desire to be closer to home and raise his family near his roots. Despite facing criticism for leaving Calgary, he remained dedicated to Columbus and was determined to bring success to the team. His untimely passing leaves a significant void in the Blue Jackets’ roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
